UO Libraries
The UO Libraries has holdings of over 100,000 resources related to East Asia, including monographs, electronic databases, journals, bibliographies, slides, reference materials, DVDs, and a popular reading collection of books in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The library also boasts an impressive Special Collections, and subject librarians who are happy to assist scholars in their research.
Subject Librarians
To assist with your studies, the UO Knight Library employs subject librarians who specialize in East Asia.
Kevin McDowell is the Japanese Studies and History Librarian who has worked to expand the digitization of resources and has built a network of experts in nōsatsu, or votive prayer slips. UO boasts the largest collection of nōsatsu outside of Japan.
Xiaotong Wang is the Chinese Studies Specialist who regularly travels to China to acquire new titles and to build relationships with Chinese libraries for the purposes of resource-sharing and exchange.
The UO’s Special Collections offers monographs, manuscripts, archives, photographs, architectural drawings, original illustrations and drawings, broadsides, pamphlets, stamps, autographs, letters, and pieces of ephemeria. They also host digital collections, and research guides to assist in information gathering.
This guide provides links to many of the resources that can be found in the UO collection. It provides individual research guides on many subjects, and links to databases and bibliographies.
UO features the largest collection of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean language materials in the state of Oregon. The Chinese collection includes pieces of modern fiction, art history, Qing and post-imperial history, social sciences, Ming dyntasy history, and the history of the Communist Party.
UO hosts an online collections of e-books and database of full text web resources through Oregon Digital. It provides searchable full text to facilitate information gathering, and includes resources like maps, images, audio files, and film and cinema links.

Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) was built on a collection of Asian art donated by Gertrude Bass Warner who lived and traveled Asia collecting art for more than thirty years. The museum has extensive Asian art holdings, as well as collections of American art. It hosts many special exhibits and educational programs each year, and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
The JSMA’s collection of Chinese art includes court textiles, traditional Chinese paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jade, glass, lacquer, metalwork, furniture and contemporary objects.
The JSMA’s collection of Japanese art includes prints, screen paintings, scroll paintings, albums, Buddhist sculptures, ceramics, lacquer, metalwork, textiles, arms and armor, dolls, and decorative objects.
Technology Information
All participants will be given access to the UO Wireless network during their stay. There are several computer labs on campus available to seminar participants. Lab services include PC and Mac computers with software including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite. Grayscale and color printing is available.
